DEBATE: Would a Change in Palestinian Authority Leadership Affect the Peace Process?

editor 8 May 2018

By Dr. George N. Tzogopoulos.. BESA Center Online Debate No. 10, May 6, 2018

Q:   In 2005, Mahmoud Abbas was elected to a four-year term as president of the Palestinian Authority (PA). Thirteen years later he remains in the position without having held any further elections. While the date of his departure cannot be predicted, scenarios for the new leadership of the PA are already being examined. BESA joins the debate by posing the question: Would a change in the PA’s leadership affect the peace process?

220 Airstrikes on Palestinians; World Yawns

editor 2 May 2018

By Khaled Abu Toameh.. Dropping barrels of dynamite on houses and hospitals in a Palestinian refugee camp is apparently of no interest to those who pretend to champion Palestinians around the world. Nor does the issue seem to move the UN Security Council. UNRWA said that of the estimated 438,000 Palestine refugees remaining inside Syria, more than 95% (418,000) are in critical need of sustained humanitarian assistance. Dutch newspaper slammed for ‘anti-Semitic’ cartoon on Gaza protests

editor 25 April 2018

By Michael Bachner.. Simon Wiesenthal Center says image of IDF slaughtering Palestinians to celebrate Israel’s 70th anniversary will encourage Hamas terror, anti-Jewish sentiment in Holland. A newspaper in the Netherlands has come under fire for publishing a cartoon depicting an Israeli soldier shooting masses of Palestinians on the Gaza border in celebration of the Jewish state’s 70th Independence Day, which was marked on Thursday (April 19, 2018). PMW Bulletins: To avenge the Crusaders’ defeat by Muslims, the West created Israel

editor 14 April 2018

By Itamar Marcus and Nan Jacques Zilberdik..  The Palestinian Authority continues to deny Israel’s historical right to exist, claiming Israel is merely a colony of the West created illegally and it is destined “not to survive.” In an op-ed by a regular columnist in the official PA daily, Israel is described as “the colonialist satanic plant in the region on the ruins of the Palestinian people’s Nakba.” The Nakba or “the catastrophe,” is the Palestinian term for the establishment of the State of Israel: (more…)

Analysis: In Private, Palestinian Leadership Opposes Gaza Protests

editor 14 April 2018

By Adam Rasgon.. Despite the Palestinian leadership’s public expressions of solidarity with thousands of Gazan protesters, it privately stands in opposition to the ongoing demonstrations. The Ramallah-based Palestinian leadership has taken a public stance in support of Palestinians who have been protesting for more than two weeks on the Gazan side of the border between Israel and the Gaza Strip. Checkmating the smart Abbas

editor 31 March 2018

By Caroline Glick.. PLO chief and Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas is no idiot. He didn’t survive as Yasser Arafat’s deputy for 40 years and as his successor for 14 by being stupid. So if he isn’t stupid, why is he attacking the United States? Why did he deliver an anti-American diatribe Monday night (March 19, 2018) that would have made Ho Chi Minh proud? Not only did Abbas call US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman a “son of a dog.” He blamed the US for all the woes of the Arab world. (more…)

Taylor Force Act signed into law as part of massive spending bill

editor 30 March 2018

By JNS.. The Taylor Force Act, legislation that seeks to cut financial aid to the Palestinian Authority unless it ends its payments to terrorists and their families, has been passed by Congress as part of a massive $1.3 trillion spending bill. “I truly appreciate the hard work of the Force family and the many friends of Taylor Force who made it clear to Congress the practice of #PaytoSlay must be stopped,” Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), who introduced the bill in 2016, tweeted on Friday (March 23, 2018). Debate: Should US Aid to the Palestinians Be Suspended?

editor 24 March 2018

By Dr. George N. Tzogopoulos.. BESA Center Online Debate No. 6, February 8, 2018.

Q: On January 2, 2018, US President Donald Trump threatened to pull funding from the Palestinians with the tweet: “But with the Palestinians no longer willing to talk peace, why should we make any of these massive future payments to them?” Two weeks later, the US said that it while it remains committed to a voluntary contribution of $60 million to sustain Palestinian schools and health services, it is holding back a further $65 million for reconsideration. BESA joins the debate by posing the question: Should US aid to the Palestinians be suspended? Arab Leaders Pressure Mahmoud Abbas

editor 22 March 2018

By Yoni Ben Menachem.. Egypt and Saudi Arabia are putting mounting pressure on the chairman of the Palestinian Authority to accept President Donald Trump’s “deal of the century.” Senior Fatah sources reckon that Mahmoud Abbas will not compromise on Palestinian “red lines,” and when he retires from political life he will be known as the leader who did not succumb to pressure to accept the American offer. How Palestinians Silence Palestinians

editor 14 February 2018

By Khaled Abu Toameh.. Mohammed Al-Dayeh has been under interrogation on suspicion of establishing and managing two Facebook pages — “Sons of the Martyrs” and “No to Corruption.” The Palestinian Authority claims that both accounts were used to wage a smear campaign against top Palestinian officials and accuse them of financial and administrative corruption. There is only one small problem regarding the charges against Al-Dayeh: The man cannot read or write, and as such there is no way he could have posted the offensive remarks on Facebook.
