The Historical Significance of the Balfour Declaration

editor 6 November 2017

By Ambassador Dore Gold.. * Ambassador Dore Gold is the Guest Editor of this special issue of the Jewish Political Studies Review. The stated purpose of the Balfour Declaration from November 2, 1917 and the circumstances under which it was published are generally known. The most common explanation was that Britain and the Allied Powers were moved by idealism and their interests. At a critical point in the First World War, the British cabinet needed to secure world Jewish support for the Allied cause and hoped at the same time to keep both the United States and Russia on their side. Brits Still Two-Faced Over Balfour

editor 31 October 2017

By Melanie Phillips.. Astonishingly, the British Foreign Office is still continuing to undermine the Balfour Declaration, the centenary of which falls in a couple of weeks’ time. In a speech at the UN Security Council a few days ago Jonathan Allen, the UK’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, said the following: “From the outset, I would like to make clear, as we approach the centenary of the Balfour Declaration next month, that the UK understands and respects the sensitivities many have about the Declaration and the events that have taken place in the region since 1917. The 80th Anniversary of the Two-State Solution

editor 7 October 2017

By Rick Richman.. In 1937, an official British report first proposed the partition of Mandate Palestine. The story behind it helps to explain why the Arab-Jewish conflict remains unresolved. In this epochal year of Zionist anniversaries—the 120th of the First Zionist Conference in Basle, the 100th of the Balfour Declaration, the 70th of the 1947 UN Partition Resolution, the 50th of the Six-Day War—there is yet another to be marked: the 80th anniversary of the 1937 British Peel Commission Report, which first proposed a “two-state solution” for Palestine. By David A. Dangoor.. Today we are also secured by our ties in trade, investment, security, cooperation, technology and science, for the benefit of the peoples of both countries. A hundred years ago, British foreign secretary Arthur Balfour wrote a short letter to Lord Walter Rothschild, a leader of the British Jewish community, for transmission to the Zionist Federation of Great Britain and Ireland. The British Foreign Office Remains True To Type

editor 4 May 2017

By Melanie Phillips.. The British Prime Minister, Theresa May, appears to be a genuine supporter of Israel. In which case she needs to address the fact that her Foreign Office is not. The Palestinians have been demanding that the British government apologise for the 1917 Balfour Declaration which supported “the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people”. This declaration was embodied in the 1922 Mandate under which Britain accepted the administration of Palestine and the obligation to settle the Jews there. (more…)

Battle over Balfour Declaration heats up… 99 years after it was issued

editor 1 December 2016

By Herb Keinon.. “There was already a Jewish majority in Jerusalem in the mid-19th century, well before the Balfour Declaration.” A month after a Palestinian group met in Britain’s House of Lords with the aim of burying the Balfour Declaration, an Israeli group on Tuesday (November 29, 2016) will take to a room in the House of Commons to praise it. Dore Gold, the head of the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs and up until a month ago the Foreign Ministry’s director-general, will hold a meeting titled “Refuting Balfour’s Detractors” to provide a high-profile response to Palestinian efforts to get a British apology, or even to extract compensation, for the November 1917 declaration that paved the way for the Jewish state. editor 24 November 2016

By Andrew Tucker.. Ninety-nine years ago, on 2nd November 1917, the British Foreign Secretary Arthur James Balfour wrote a letter to Baron Rothschild, a leader of the British Jewish community, conveying the content of the decision of the British War Cabinet three days earlier.
