From Jewish Saint, to Israeli Politician, to Diaspora’s Ally

editor 9 July 2018

By David M. Halbfinger.. JERUSALEM — He has fought the Soviets from inside a gulag, battled against the peace process from inside Israel’s right wing, and spent the past nine years trying to stitch together Israeli and diaspora Jews just as they seemed to be pulling farther and farther apart. He won the first struggle, claims vindication in the second, and came up well short of success in the third. Much more needs to be done, Natan Sharansky acknowledges, if Jews in Israel are going to avoid permanently alienating their overseas brethren, particularly in America, over religious, political and philosophical differences.  [Photo top right:Outgoing Jewish Agency Chairman Natan Sharansky speaks during the board of governors conference of the Jewish Agency, at the Orient Hotel in Jerusalem, on June 24, 2018. Preparing for Passover in Ukraine’s last shtetl

editor 5 April 2017

By Cnaan Liphshiz.. BERSHAD, Ukraine (JTA) — At first glance, this drab town 160 miles south of Kiev seems nearly identical to the settlements that dot the poverty-stricken district of Vinnitsa. Shrouded in a seemingly permanent cloud of smoke from wood fires — still the standard means of heating here — Bershad, population 13,000, features two rickety bridges over the polluted (and presently frozen) Dokhna River, roads traversed by Soviet-era clunkers and an utter absence of street lights. editor 14 November 2016

By Adam Eliyahu Berkowitz.. “And the inhabitant of this coast-land shall say in that day: Behold, such is our expectation, whither we fled for help to be delivered from the king of Ashur; and how shall we escape?” Isaiah 20:3. Election Day in America (Tuesday November 8, 2016) was delayed one week this year, resulting in a remarkable confluence of events that at first glance seem insignificant, but taken all together contain a message that Jews in America should seriously consider: it’s time to move to Israel. [Blog] The Land of Israel and Aliyah

editor 1 November 2016

By Ye En Jung.. “Now Hashem said unto Avram: ‘Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto the land that I will show thee.” Genesis 12:1. There is not one country in the world that is not affected, either directly or indirectly, by terrorism and war. However of all places, we know that it has hit the Middle East the hardest. Radical shifts of foundational plates such as politics, government, and economy in the Middle East has collapsed the once-flourishing modern cities that sustained millions of people. (more…)

Outrage Over Special Labeling for French Passports of Jews on Aliyah; Residence Listed as ‘Israel/Palestinian Territories’

editor 9 June 2016

By Ruthie Blum.. Prominent Jews expressed outrage this week (June 8, 2016) over new French Foreign Ministry “software” that lists the residency of French citizens who made aliyah as “Israel/Palestinian Territories” in their passports. “Grotesque” is how Nidra Poller – an American Jewish intellectual who has been living in France for more than four decades — described the move. “French citizens living in Israel have to move over and make room on their passports for those Palestinian territories that the French pretend to cherish,” she told The Algemeiner. The rocky road of integration of Ethiopian Jews

editor 26 August 2015

By Israel Today.. The life of the majority of the Ethiopian Jews is characterized by social and economic challenges. This holds true for both, the new Ethiopian immigrants arriving nowadays and Ethiopians who immigrated decades ago and for their children as well.

The biggest waves of immigration were back in the 1980s and 1990s which peaked during operation “Solomon” (1991). Still, the ongoing economic hardship can be seen in the fact that about half of the 125,000 Ethiopian Israelis live under the poverty line. One reason for is that once they arrived in Israel they didn’t have any family to support them and were therefore, economically and financially left on their own. (more…)
