Israel: Covenants & Kingdom (10) – Chapter 2 – From Creation to Abraham’s Departure from Babylon

Judaism and the Covenant with Noah
In Judaism, the Seven Laws of the Sons of Noah (Hebrew: Sheva mitzvot B’nei Noach), or the Noahide Laws, are seen as a set of moral imperatives. According to the Talmud, they were given by God as a binding set of laws for the ‘children of Noah’, which means all of humanity. Judaism holds that any non-Jew who adheres to these laws is regarded as a righteous Gentile, and is assured of a place in the World to Come (Hebrew: Olam Haba), the final reward of the righteous. Provisions of the Covenant with Noah
Man’s responsibility to populate the earth was reaffirmed in Genesis 9:1, 7. The subjection of the animal kingdom to man is restated, but to be administered under a new relationship. Whereas previously man and animals coexisted in peace, with the animals probably cooperating fully with man’s care and maintenance, now the animal kingdom would fear man and be dominated by him (Genesis 9:2). Man was permitted to eat the flesh of every ‘moving creature’ outside the realm of man. [Photo top right: Noah’s Ark, Italianate mural painting, mid-16th century studiolo](more…)

The unconditional Covenant with Noah for the nations of the world
Then God made a Covenant with this new mankind on the basis of the blood of sacrifice. Genesis 8:20-22: “…Then Noah built an altar to the LORD and, taking some of all the clean animals and clean birds, he sacrificed burnt offerings on it. The LORD smelled the pleasing aroma and said in His heart: ‘Never again will I curse the ground because of humans, even though every inclination of the human heart is evil from childhood. And never again will I destroy all living creatures, as I have done. As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease’…” [Photo top right: The rainbow sign by Joseph Anton Koch (1768–1839)].  (more…)

Biblical Reflections – Lake of Fire

editor 11 January 2018

By Rev Willem J.J. Glashouwer.. “What do you want with us, Son of God?” they shouted. “Have You come here to torture us before the appointed time?” (Matthew 8:28-32) “Depart from Me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.” (Matthew 25:41) “And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever.” (Revelation 20:10) “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” (Ephesians 6:12). By Rev Willem J.J. Glashouwer.. A form of Christian theology, or perhaps one should rather say anti-Christian theology, has for centuries held the Jewish people collectively responsible for the death of Jesus. The Church has been less merciful than God. It cannot be repeated often enough that the Crusades, Inquisition, Pogroms, and Holocaust took place in the Christian world, and represent Christian anti-Semitism. Even today, the World Council of Churches issues one pro-Palestinian pronouncement after another. (more…)

Part I: Jerusalem, the Eternal Dwelling Place

When Israel reclaimed Jerusalem in 1967, it made the hearts of devout Jews skip a beat. Would this be the moment the Temple would be rebuilt? And if so, where would that be? Of course, many Jews said that Jerusalem should be the place, on top of Mount Zion, where the temples of Solomon and Zerubbabel had been. It would be built in the same location that the Temple was destroyed by the heathen nations, Babel and Rome. But why build it in Jerusalem? (more…)

A Word to Consider

By Rev Willem J.J. Glashouwer..

“…The sixth angel sounded his trumpet, and I heard a voice coming from the four horns of the golden altar that is before God. It said to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates.” And the four angels who had been kept ready for this very hour and day and month and year were released to kill a third of mankind. The number of the mounted troops was twice ten thousand times ten thousand [two hundred million]. I heard their number…” (Revelation 9:13-16). (more…)

By Rev Willem J.J.  Glashouwer.. Those who have followed the developments in the Middle East year after year will not have missed that in November 2012, the General Assembly – voting by a large majority (139 in favour to 9 against with 41 abstentions) – accorded Palestine ‘non-Member Observer State status’ in the United Nations. Since then, pro-Palestinian and anti-Israel resolutions follow each other in quick succession. (more…)

Jerusalem, the UN and the times of the Gentiles

editor 12 January 2017

By Rev Willem J.J. Glashouwer.. When we see what is happening in the UN at the moment, we are reminded of what our Lord said about Jerusalem. Jesus spoke a lot about Jerusalem, and what would happen to Jerusalem in the future. He said “Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled”. This has something to do with His coming again, at the end of the age. Is that the time we are living in?   (more…)

Jerusalem and the Temple Mount

By Rev Willem J.J. Glashouwer.. Jerusalem and the Temple Mount
“…But you will cross the Jordan and settle in the land the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, and He will give you rest from all your enemies around you so that you live in safety. Then to the place the LORD your God will choose as a dwelling for His name – there you shall bring everything I command you: your burnt offerings and sacrifices, your tithes and the special gifts, and all the choice possessions you have vowed to the LORD. And there rejoice before the LORD your God, you, your sons and daughters, your menservants and maidservants…” (Deuteronomy 12:10-12). (more…)
