Luke 17:20-21: Once, on being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied, “The coming of the kingdom of God is not something that can be observed, nor will people say, ‘Here it is,’ or ‘There it is,’ because the kingdom of God is within you.”
When we look at the New Testament, the Kingdom of God appears to be the central message of Jesus. During His ministry He preached the Kingdom of God. The restoration of the Kingdom is in the centre of the expectation of Israel and the apostles (Acts 1:6). Generally spoken we could discern three phases of the Kingdom: 1. the Kingdom present in Christ during His ministry in Israel; 2. the Kingdom present in the believers through the holy Spirit after Christ’s resurrection and ascension; 3. the Kingdom manifest and present in Christ’s millennial reign after His coming in glory.
Within this overall scheme, I would like to meditate a little on some overlooked aspects of the Kingdom, especially of the Kingdom ‘within you’. Just in order to ask a few questions at things we tend to take for granted. (more…)
