UK–Israel Relations: 100 Years Since The Balfour Declaration

By David A. Dangoor.. Today we are also secured by our ties in trade, investment, security, cooperation, technology and science, for the benefit of the peoples of both countries. A hundred years ago, British foreign secretary Arthur Balfour wrote a short letter to Lord Walter Rothschild, a leader of the British Jewish community, for transmission to the Zionist Federation of Great Britain and Ireland. The Balfour Declaration was a seminal moment in the long history of Zionist activity and Jewish dreams of a return to their indigenous and ancestral homeland. (more…)

The British Foreign Office Remains True To Type

By Melanie Phillips.. The British Prime Minister, Theresa May, appears to be a genuine supporter of Israel. In which case she needs to address the fact that her Foreign Office is not. The Palestinians have been demanding that the British government apologise for the 1917 Balfour Declaration which supported “the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people”. This declaration was embodied in the 1922 Mandate under which Britain accepted the administration of Palestine and the obligation to settle the Jews there. (more…)

Battle over Balfour Declaration heats up… 99 years after it was issued

By Herb Keinon.. “There was already a Jewish majority in Jerusalem in the mid-19th century, well before the Balfour Declaration.” A month after a Palestinian group met in Britain’s House of Lords with the aim of burying the Balfour Declaration, an Israeli group on Tuesday (November 29, 2016) will take to a room in the House of Commons to praise it. Dore Gold, the head of the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs and up until a month ago the Foreign Ministry’s director-general, will hold a meeting titled “Refuting Balfour’s Detractors” to provide a high-profile response to Palestinian efforts to get a British apology, or even to extract compensation, for the November 1917 declaration that paved the way for the Jewish state. Israel is the legal frontier of Europe

Ninety-nine years ago, on 2nd November 1917, the British Foreign Secretary Arthur James Balfour wrote a letter to Baron Rothschild, a leader of the British Jewish community, conveying the content of the decision of the British War Cabinet three days earlier. The decision was as follows:

“His Majesty’s Government views with favour the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people, and will use their best endeavours to facilitate the achievement of this object, it being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine, or the rights and political status enjoyed by Jews in any other country.” (more…)

Abbas and the strategy of falsehood

By Zalman Shoval.. The announcement last week (July 25, 2016) by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, through his foreign secretary, that the Palestinians intend to sue Britain for the 1917 Balfour Declaration, might cause some chuckles, but to paraphrase Shakespeare, there is a method to the madness. Since neither history nor the law is on the Palestinians’ side in their struggle against Israel, their preferred method is to fabricate history in an attempt to undermine the legality of international agreements that contradict their objectives. Film: Relations between Israel, UK tarnished by Mandate period

By Henri Rome.. Anti-Semitic actions by British are subject of documentary film. Violent and anti-Semitic actions by the British during the Mandate period reverberate today in the relations between Israel and the UK, two British journalists said at an event on Sunday (November 3, 2013) marking the 96th anniversary of the Balfour Declaration. The conference at the Menachem Begin Heritage Center in Jerusalem featured the Hebrew premiere of a documentary about British policy from the period between the publication of the declaration, on November 2, 1917, to independence.
